11/30/2010 - $2.6 Million Metal Theft
Since Skyd Cable Systems is in the business of preventing tool and equipment theft, we naturally follow metal theft trends as well, because they are just as devastating to contractors and tradesman as stolen equipment. And this Baltimore story shows just how big the market really is for stolen construction material. Even though the metal thieves didn't find a buyer for their $2.6 million metal heist, it's a shocking testament to the growing trend.

We all know metal and cooper theft has been getting out of control, but this is getting ridiculous. Metal thieves actually used a cherry picker to steal live power lines. This takes some serious nerve and skill. Hopefully pawn shops and scrap yards will use some skepticism when someone walks in with half a mile of power lines.

Propertyroom.com was founded by police officers. The website states that they “specialize in the auction of stolen, seized, found and surplus goods and vehicles. Serving over 1,500 law enforcement and other public agencies nationwide, we offer a fraud-free marketplace with superior customer support.”
The website has been in operation for years, but recently it has been gaining popularity as a place to find good deals on a wide selection of tools.

The great thing about this website is that if you find your stolen stuff in their inventory, they will return your tools for free through their “STEAL-IT-BACK PROPERTY RECOVERY SERVICE.”

The Columbus Dispatch reports that Huey Granderson, a 33 year old Millersport resident, operated a $3.4-million theft ring with 9 others who stole construction equipment and tools.

03/25/2009 - Lojack Theft Study
Lojack has recently published it’s 8th annual Construction Equipment Theft Study. According to the study, “for the calendar year 2008, construction theft continued at a steady pace with organized crime driving theft and loaders being the number one theft target.” Furthermore, “newer equipment on the job site is the most common theft target because of higher resale value.” The study lists the types of equipment most frequently stolen are:
1. Backhoe Loaders/Skip Loaders/Wheel Loaders/Track Loaders
2. Light Utility/Work Trucks and Trailers
3. Generators/Air Compressors/Welders
4. Skid Steers
5. Forklifts/Scissor Lifts
